Phineas O Mallyce sculpture by RandyHand Phineas O Mallyce sculpture by RandyHand
A little better shot of the father...

I'm really happy with how this sculpt came out just because I've never done a bust, and never spent this much time on getting the wrinkles, bumps, folds etc. the way I wanted them.
I spent a total of 2 weeks, give or take a few days, on the sculpture.
I used a soft tan oil base clay by J Mac.
It measures 23 1/2 inches tall, 19 inches wide and 19 inches deep.
Hope you all like it!
Ps. One little side note...I forgot to thank :icondjoseph: for being responsible for me doing this sculpt...
It was funny because I originally intended to sculpt a fish head monster thingy bust, but through our conversations something switched in my brain and I felt the need to sculpt Father O Mally instead...
Thanks Josef!

It's funny because I got to a certain point with this piece, thinking I was nearing completion and then I looked at your home page and the old man on it and thought...shi#...I got some work ahead of me.
Thought you'd get a kick out of that.
Whenever I'm sculpting now, I think of you, Mark Newman, or my buddy Jerome Ranft out at Pixar...
I think about you guys looking over my shoulder, or just try to think of your work and strive towards that skill level.
I may never reach that level in my lifetime, but it really keeps me pushing to better myself with each piece I do...
Sorry for the long winded message, I just thought you should know what an influence you are on me and others here on DA....
Take care man!
Randy

That means a lot coming from someone of your caliber...
I really did have a lot of fun with it...
I'm actually thinking about sculpting a little funky creature that is sitting on his left shoulder (right shoulder on the pic)
Do you think that would be too much? I'd appreciate your feedback...
Thanks again my friend!

You can really tell you had fun! It's a great piece! I personally love the idea of a small companion for him. I think it would be a really unique addition, and scale is always fun.
Keep up the awesome-ness!!! :D

Thanks so much for your feedback Trev!
After talking to Tim Miller and Mark Newman on the phone today and then your input just now, I decided to go for it...
I'm going to make it out of sculpey and submit two separate images to Spectrum...One with the companion and one without...
Thanks again man!
Take care,
Randy

Awesome! I think both versions will be equally striking...but going against the grade and adding another character into a bust is really a great idea! He looks like he might like a buddy.

Thanks John, I really appreciate your support.
I do want to get a more crisp and clear picture for the Spectrum submission before I send it though...
I've got a better feeling about this piece than others I've submitted, but still, you never know what the judges are looking for...
I'll just put it out there and see if it makes it...If not, I've got a new person piece either way...
Take care,
Randy

Man, I was hoping you'd want to enter Spectrum. If anybodies work here on DA belongs in Spectrum, it's yours...
I'm going to post a journal like I did last year asking people to tell me if they are entering and what they are entering.
I'd love to post yours if you're willing to reveal it!
later man!
