Base maker tool by RandyHand
Base maker tool
This is the tool I made to make the base for my Count Veektor piece. A buddy of mine showed me this trick a few years ago and it really is nice when you are in a pinch for a decent looking base as part of your sculpt. The base itself is made from plaster of paris.  The red mark on the tool represents where a nail goes through from top to bottom. I was able to get a nice straight hole drilled with a drill press and small bit. The hole is just big enough for a nail to pass through, and loose enough that it spins in a circle freely. For a center pivot point I used a small chunk of 2x4 board with a hole pre-drilled to receive the nail. It needs to be perfectly straight up and down as well. I prep all surfaces with Vaseline so none of the plaster will stick to anything once it hardens.  I then mix plaster of paris and wait for it to get thick and then I slap it down around the center pivot point. I then put this tool in to place and simply turn it around in a complete circle to push the plaster around and get the base pattern to come out. It takes a few times to get the hang of it, but it's a real slick trick for making the exact size and pattern of base you want to sculpt on.

This years B-day gift for my wife 3 by RandyHand
This years B-day gift for my wife 3
Here's this years offering for my wife's birthday 2014. I love the fact that her birthday is so close to Halloween, which just happens to be our favorite holiday as well! This was another one where I had a vague idea of what I wanted to make, but it became something completely different from my original idea. I had a raccoon skull laying around in my studio that I found it on one of my nature hikes. I used that, a piece of gnarled wood, Super Sculpey, Apoxy Sculpt, bamboo skewers, the top to a spice jar, and a round turn table that I normally use for presenting my sculptures on at art shows. It measures 13 inches high and wide, and it measures 7 inches off the wall. My wife loved it so I was a happy boy! :)

Howdy!

Hello to all of my DA pals,

Had a great conversation last night with my buddy Jerome Ranft who sculpts for Pixar. It was such a huge compliment when he asked permission to use some of my images for an upcoming concept/character development sculpting class he is going to be teaching there at Pixar. He wants to use my large mouth bass, the vulture, and a few more. Wohoooo! If you go to Pixar.com and click on 'Behind the Scenes' you can see an interview with Jerome under the 'sculpting' category. He's a great guy, good friend,  and an incredible sculptor!

Hope you all have an incredible weekend!
Thanks for all the great messages, faves, watches, Llama Badges, and such!
All my best to you,
Randy
